Local Markets are Stocked in Haiti’s South
Send money, not food.
Unlike the food catastrophe after Hurricane Matthew, the earthquake of August 14, 2021 has not decimated the South’s supply of nutritious local foods. In fact, the markets are literally teaming with them from Pestel to Les Cayes.
In the Konbit Jounalis Lib video below, a local official in Kayimit passionately advocates for his community. He stresses that people wish to get out of the rain. Food donations are not needed.
With so much food for sale and people depending on the income of selling produce, food donations may do more harm than good.
Over and over (see more first-hand accounts), survivors of the August 14 earthquake report their most pressing need to be cash to buy building materials, food and medical care.
